Toyota continues to defend itself against the growing number of sudden acceleration lawsuits. The company issued a recall involving some 3.8 million vehicles, and has also made claims that it will stop producing dangerous vehicles and will fix the problem. Lawsuits allege the sudden acceleration problem is connected to a defect in the electronic throttle system. However, Toyota maintains its argument that there is nothing wrong with the electrical systems.
This is a question that many Toyota owners may wonder. Because the issue has the potential to affect hundreds of thousands of people, it has been given a lot of media attention. There have been several hypotheses as to what is causing unintended sudden acceleration in these vehicles. Although some may disagree, Toyota argues that its electrical system is not defective. In fact, the company claims the accidents may be caused by two main factors:
As people are still trying to figure out the exact cause of sudden acceleration, the number one question that arises is whether sudden acceleration is caused by a defective auto part, or if the incidents occur as a result of driver error.
As the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) continues to investigate the cause of sudden acceleration accidents, the controversy thickens. Plaintiffs and their lawyers continue to argue that there is something wrong with the electrical systems, and Toyota and others argue that human error or misplaced floor mats are to blame.
The issue at hand, however, is that people have been injured and killed as a result of unintended acceleration. A prime example is an accident that occurred in August 2009; an off-duty California Highway Patrolman and three of his family members died when his Lexus sedan accelerated out of control.
To date, more than 15 deaths and about 250 injuries are blamed on sudden acceleration.
