Problems with sudden acceleration in some Toyota vehicles have created public debate and concern amongst consumers. Of course, that is not surprising, as millions of people own a Toyota car, truck or SUV, meaning millions of people could potentially be at risk. Investigations are still being conducted to determine the exact cause of the problem.
The acceleration problem has sparked controversy and debate. Toyota claims the problems are linked to misplaced floor mats and/or sticky gas pedals, others disagree, alleging the problem lies in an electrical defect. A study was released to Congress in February 2010 stating that the acceleration problems could, in fact, be caused by an electrical defect.
Following release of the study, Toyota made a statement, claiming that the study is "completely unrealistic under real-world circumstances." David Gilbert, a professor at Southern Illinois University, conducted the study. Toyota had a team of its own researchers speak out about the problems, March 8, 2010, in an effort to clear up any fears from the public.
The team of researchers included Chris Gerdes, a professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University. They explained to the public that sudden acceleration via a circuit malfunction could not be replicated in real life circumstances. Researchers reportedly aimed to eliminate doubt in the safety of Toyota vehicles.
The national issue surrounding problems with sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles may have already made some consumers question the safety of Toyota vehicles. The automaker has recalled millions of popular vehicles, claiming that the problems stem from slipper floor mats that may interfere with the pedals. And, in one of its latest announcements, Toyota claimed there may be problems with certain accelerator pedal mechanisms.
Investigations to determine whether there is a problem with the electric throttle systems continue. In the meantime, if you have a complaint regarding sudden, unintended acceleration in your Toyota, you should contact an attorney for legal help; you may qualify to seek compensation for your injuries and losses.
