Last year, nearly 300 individuals were killed on Connecticut roadways, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While more than 35 percent of these car accidents involved alcohol, in some cases, vehicle equipment defects were the primary cause of such tragic wrongful deaths. Most recently, Toyota vehicles have been announced to have some major defects that are causing the cars to suddenly accelerate without the driver stepping on the accelerator pedal – and without the ability to slow or stop the car by using the vehicle's braking system.
In fact, as recently as March 2010, there were three reported car accidents suspected of involving sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) with Toyota Camry vehicles that left one man dead. Although Toyota has issued a massive nationwide recall to correct such serious defects, the Connecticut State Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, has announced that he is conducting his own investigation regarding SUA, as well as Toyota's safety testing system, recall procedures and crash investigation procedures.
