A sticky accelerator pedal or improperly placed floor mat that could possibly result in unintended acceleration has led to the recall of 2.3 million Toyota vehicles in the U.S and more than 8 million vehicles worldwide. The company, for the moment, has suspended the production and sales of eight of its most popular models. While the problem might be rare, when considering the total number of Toyotas sold, a defect when it does occur, could have disastrous consequences.
The Toyota vehicles recalled for unintended sudden acceleration include:
A twin of the Matrix, the 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe, also has been recalled. Vehicles that have not been recalled include the Camry Hybrid, the Highlander, Hybrid, and all vehicles made in Japan. The latter have a vehicle identification number beginning with the letter "J."
Toyota maintains the problem is the result of improperly placed floor mats that get stuck under gas pedals or sticky accelerator pedals. The government is questioning whether a manufacturing defect in the vehicles' electronic throttle control system is a contributing factor. Toyota replies it has done the safety research and found no such defects.
The federal government is now challenging the rigor of Toyota's acceleration safety tests. The Energy and Commerce Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives wrote a letter to Toyota executive Jim Lentz that the Toyota's safety reports have "an absence of documents" showing how thoroughly the company studied the possibility of unintended acceleration. The committee said it wanted to know who is involved with the testing and requested reports every quarter on charges by consumers of unintended acceleration.
Consumer Reports said that letters notifying owners of recalled vehicles were supposed to be mailed in February. The magazine urges "all owners not to delay in having the repair performed."
