There are over 100,000 different species types of mold. Depending on what mold exposure has occurred will depend on the severity of the side effects suffered. About 80 mold species are believed to cause some form of illness, with some types of mold being linked to sometimes-fatal conditions. The number of toxic mold lawsuits has sharply increased over the last couple years, and many people attribute this increase to the growing awareness of the risks involved with being exposed to toxic mold.
There are three different types of mold categories determined by the response humans have to it. Allergenic molds produce mild allergic or asthmatic responses, usually amongst people who are normally allergic or asthmatic. Sometimes this type of mold will produce typical allergy symptoms and/or rashes. Pathogenic molds are normally associated to infection. When individual that are exposed to these types of molds already have a suppressed immune system, the individual can cause very serious health effects.
Toxic mold has received the most attention because of the grave effects it can have on anyone exposed. The particular types of mold considered to be especially toxic include stachybotrys and memnoniella. According to estimates, it is believed stachybotrys toxic mold is present in as many as 50% of all homes and buildings at some level. Effects from short term to potentially deadly conditions have been linked to exposure to these types of mold, including immunosuppression and possibly cancer.
