more_legal_areas toxic-substancesToxic substances are more common in our environment than most people realize. Although we all enjoy the many products available in the U.S., we're not always aware that some of the by-products of their manufacture are quite toxic. Substances such as lead, asbestos, benzene, manganese, and mercury can cause (and have caused) many debilitating injuries, such as:
Toxic substances in the environment have also been confirmed to have caused many fatalities.
Lead
Most Americans know that lead is a toxic substance, in part because of repeated recalls of toys that have lead paint. A more widespread lead danger is the use of lead in homes built before 1978, in applications such as wall paint, plumbing, and solder (a welding material). The dust left when lead is removed is as dangerous as the original products, and many children have suffered from lead poisoning after eating or inhaling lead dust. Lead poisoning can cause neurological damage and mental retardation.
Asbestos
Asbestos is an extremely toxic substance that was used for decades in hundreds of products in homes and public buildings, before (and even after) it was found to be a carcinogen. Its microscopic fibers can be inadvertently inhaled, damaging the lungs and other internal organs. Asbestos-induced mesothelioma, asbestosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung cancer have stricken millions of people, especially workers who processed asbestos.
Benzene
Benzene is one of the most frequently used industrial chemicals. For example, it's in many types of rubber, nylon and pesticides. Unfortunately, humans can be exposed to toxic levels of benzene by inhaling or ingesting it, or by contact with the skin. Leukemia and other cancers can follow benzene exposure.
Manganese
Fumes from the burning metal produced by welding may contain manganese, a highly toxic substance that causes manganism. A neurological disease, manganism has debilitating symptoms that are much like those of Parkinson's disease — muscle stiffness and cramping, tremors, speech disturbances, and mental disorders. There is no cure for manganism.
Mercury
Breathing mercury-contaminated air from spills, burning fuel, or incinerators can result in mercury poisoning, causing permanent damage to the brain and kidneys. The brain damage can cause psychosis, vision and hearing problems, tremors and more. Severe mercury poisoning is fatal.
