The Food and Drug Administration approved Tequin in 1999 for the treatment of various conditions including pneumonia, bronchitis, urinary tract infection, kidney and skin infection, and certain sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea.
Since its release, Tequin has become one of the most frequently prescribed antibiotics on the market. However, there have been numerous safety concerns regarding serious Tequin side effects since recent reports revealed the increased risks associated with use of the drug.
On March 1, 2006, a new study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that Tequin poses potentially life-threatening blood sugar irregularities in comparison to similar antibiotics. The Tequin side effects study found that people taking Tequin were four times more likely to develop low-blood sugar and almost 17 times more likely to develop high blood sugar. In addition, diabetics and the elderly are at an increased risk of developing serious Tequin side effects.
Two weeks prior to the release of the new study, the FDA issued a stronger Tequin label warning alerting millions of consumers of the increased risks of other adverse Tequin side effects linked to the drug. The new label update is consistent with the results of the new study.
Serious possible risks and side effects associated with Tequin antibiotic may include, but are not limited to:
More common Tequin side effects include: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, and headaches.
Tequin should not be prescribed to patients who have diabetes, high blood sugar, certain hearth conditions, low blood potassium (hypokalemia), or are pregnant or nursing. It is imperative to discuss your complete medical and drug history with your doctor before using Tequin.
