drug_recall tequinA new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine reveals the link between serious blood sugar problems and deaths and the antibiotic gatifloxacin, sold under the brand name Tequin. The study concluded that people taking the antibiotic were FOUR times more likely to develop low-blood sugar levels and 17 times more likely to develop high blood sugar levels when compared to people using similar antibiotics.
Researchers conducting the Tequin study warned that low and high blood sugar irregularities linked to the use of this drug can result in Tequin deaths.
According to the FDA, cases of life-threatening incidences including Tequin deaths have been reported globally since the release of the drug in 1999. In Canada, where the study was conducted, 14 Tequin deaths have been reported since 2001. These Tequin deaths were thought to be caused by high or low blood sugar complications caused by this widely prescribed antibiotic.
Tequin, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999, is one of the most frequently prescribed antibiotics for the treatment of certain bacterial conditions including pneumonia, lung, kidney, and urinary tract infections, and the sexually transmitted disease, gonorrhea.
In February 2006, Tequin''s manufacturer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, updated the warning label on the drug. This Tequin warning alerts millions of users about the risks of serious Tequin related adverse side effects, which may also lead to Tequin deaths. Potential life-threatening risks of Tequin may include, but are not limited to, blood sugar irregularities, severe allergic reactions, central nervous system (CNS) side effects, tendon ruptures, and more.
The FDA along with Bristol-Meyers, discourage the use of Tequin in diabetics, the elderly, people with certain heart conditions, and those with pre-existing blood sugar abnormalities. Due to the heightened risk of Tequin deaths the risks associated with taking this antibiotic outweigh the potential benefits for these patient populations.
