drug_recall tequinSince its Food and Drug Administration approval in 1999, Tequin has been one of the most frequently prescribed antibiotics on the market. Tequin antibiotic is most commonly prescribed to adults for the treatment of conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus, kidney, and urinary tract infection, and certain sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea.
Concerns over the safety of Tequin antibiotic have heightened after a recent study revealed the serious life-threatening dangers associated with the use of the drug.
On March 1, 2006, a new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine revealed that Tequin antibiotic causes potentially life-threatening risks. Researcher found that people taking gatifloxacin (sold under brand Tequin) were FOUR times more likely to develop low-blood sugar and 17 times more likely to develop high-blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in comparison to similar antibiotics. In addition, the study found that Tequin antibiotic risks are even greater for people with diabetes, a condition characterized by poor blood glucose control.
Since the study''s release, the Food and Drug Administration has requested that Tequin''s manufacturer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, adopt a stronger label warning on the drug alerting consumers of the increased risks of blood sugar problems.
In addition to the newfound risks linked to Tequin use, the antibiotic poses a number of other serious adverse side effect risks, which may include severe and sometimes fatal allergic reactions, dangerous diarrhea, cardiovascular complications, inflammation and rupture in muscle tendons, and central nervous system side effects such as seizures and psychosis .
Do not take Tequin antibiotic if you are allergic to any “quinolones” (the class of antibiotic that Tequin falls into), have certain heart conditions or irregular heartbeat, low blood potassium (hypokalemia), diabetes, high blood sugar, or are pregnant or nursing. It is important that you discuss your complete medical history and current use of drugs and supplements with your doctor before starting or stopping use of this drug
