The Melanoma Research Foundation reports that individuals who are exposed to tanning beds before the age of 30 are 3 times more like to develop the skin cancer known as melanoma than their peers who don't use tanning beds.
Classified as the most serious type of skin cancer, melanoma refers to the formation of malignancies in the skin's melanin cells. Despite the fact that research has yet to definitively pinpoint all of the precise causes of melanoma, the exposure to sunlight, ultraviolet radiation and/or tanning beds has been identified as a potentially serious risk factor for this life-threatening skin cancer.
As of March 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began conducting hearings regarding whether or not tanning beds should carry a specialized warning about their possible dangers. Although the FDA has yet to rule on this issue, enough lawmakers have championed the enactment of these warnings that, as of July 1, 2010, a 10 percent tax will be imposed on consumers who purchase tanning services. Unofficially known as the tanning tax, this new law is expected to generate more than $27 million annually over the next 10 year.
Given the current controversy, it's essential that those who use tanning beds understand the symptoms of melanoma so that they know when to seek medical care to prevent potentially fatal complications. Skin cancer and melanoma symptoms may include:
Should you or a loved one start to develop any of the above-listed symptoms, it's vital that you seek immediate medical attention for an official diagnosis. The earlier melanoma is diagnosed and treated, the better chances a patient has for survival and optimal recovery.
The right melanoma treatments for a given patient will depend on the severity of the condition, as well as the patient's personal medical history. Generally, melanoma treatments involve chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy and surgical removal of the tumor.
If you or a loved one has a history of using tanning beds and has recently been diagnosed with any type of skin cancer, including melanoma, you may have a personal injury claim and be entitled to a settlement for your injuries and losses.
