The Melanoma Research Foundation reports that tanning bed use among people under the age of 30 can increase the risk of developing melanoma by up to 75 percent. Reports from the foundation have been at the center of a recent controversy surrounding the risk of indoor tanning beds. While foundation members and others argue that the potential risks should be better conveyed to consumers, advocates of tanning beds maintain the claims against tanning beds are exaggerated.
In the height of the controversy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is scheduled to hold a hearing to discuss the health risks associated with ultraviolet radiation that is given off in tanning beds. The hearing is scheduled in March 2010. Tanning beds are currently classified as safe by the FDA, however some lawmakers argue that the beds pose a danger and should have stricter regulations.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that forms in skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. According to the National Cancer Institute, there were 68,720 new melanoma cases and 8,650 deaths from melanoma cancer reported in 2009.
Tanning beds have been reported to put people at risk of developing melanoma. In fact, the World Health Organization raised the classification level of tanning beds to Group 1 ‘carcinogenic to humans’ in July 2009.
