Rare and deadly, Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a serious skin disease that may be caused by negative reactions to medications, some viral infections, cocaine use and/or some types of cancer. Stevens Johnson Syndrome occurs when the top layer of skin (epidermis) detaches from the middle layer (dermis) and causes:

• facial and tongue swelling
• hives
• a rapidly spread, red or purple skin rash
• sloughing or shedding of the skin (as skin-cell death continues)
• sore throat
• widespread skin pain
• worsening blisters that primarily affect the mucous membranes in the mouth, nose and eyes

Stevens Johnson Syndrome Facts & Statistics

Stevens Johnson Syndrome requires emergency medical treatments and, in the worst cases, it can take patients months to recover. The following Stevens Johnson Syndrome facts and statistics were complied by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Jefferson Medical College and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine:

• About 300 new cases of SJS are diagnosed each year in the U.S.
• Nearly 100,000 Stevens Johnson Syndrome deaths occur annually in the U.S.
• Caucasian men between 20 and 50 years old have the highest risk of developing SJS.
• SJS cases have been reported in patients as young as 3 months old.
• More cases of SJS arise in the early spring and winter.
• When more than 30 percent of the body surface area is plagued by SJS symptoms, the condition is known as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS).
• When patients are diagnosed with TENS, there is between 25 and 35 percent risk of death (versus between 1 and 5 percent in milder SJS cases).
• Half of all SJS cases have no discernible cause.
• SJS first manifests as an upper respiratory tract infection, causing fever and sore throat. In fact, 85 percent of all SJS patients experience fever.
• The medications most frequently reported to be associated with causing SJS include Bextra, Celebrex, Daypro, Dilantin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Bactrim, Sepra and penicillin.
