Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a rare, but life-threatening, condition that significantly compromises the skin and mucous membranes. Stevens Johnson rash is often caused by an adverse reaction to a medication. Adverse drug reactions kill 150,000 people every year and are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Stevens Johnson Syndrome—Skin Rash

A primary symptom of Stevens Johnson Syndrome is severe rash that affects both the skin and mucous membranes.

Stevens Johnson Syndromes—Rash of the Eyes, Mouth & Nose

Rashes made of painful blisters will develop in the mucous membranes of people experiencing Stevens Johnson Syndrome. The term mucous membrane is used to describe the moist lining of the following:

• Mouth and nose
• Eyes
• Anus/rectum
• Vagina

Rash of the Eyes

People who are diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome are at risk of becoming blind due to scar tissue that forms on the eyes as a result of blisters and sores that form. In minor cases, patients will not have long-term effects, but may experience dryness/ burning in the eyes conjunctivitis and red eyes during the course of the condition.

Rash of the Mouth

An extremely uncomfortable symptom of Stevens Johnson Syndrome is mouth sores. When the sores develop in the mouth and on the lips as a result of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, the patient may have difficulty eating and drinking.

Rash of the Nose

Rash can develop in the nose as a result of the skin disorder. Painful lesions and lesions may develop in the nose.

SJS is also called erythema multiforme (or erythema multiforme majus) and ectodermosis erosiva pluriorificialis.
