As with most conditions, patients diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome will have the most optimistic prognoses when their condition is diagnosed early and treated immediately so that no further health complications arise. Rare and life threatening, Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a rare, severe skin disorder in which:

• The top layer of the skin separates from the underlying layers
• The skin cells die and slough (shed) from the body
• Patients develop serious skin blisters, lesions, rashes, inflammation, itchiness and pain
• The internal organs can be damages from lesions that result in inflammation

When more than 30 percent of the body surface area is affected by symptoms, the condition is referred to as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS). According to studies, Stevens Johnson Syndrome is most likely to develop in Caucasian men between the ages of 20 and 50 years old. However, it's important to note that cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome have been reported in all types of patients, including male and female patients as young as 3 months old.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome: Mortality Statistics

The outcome of a case of Stevens Johnson Syndrome will depend on factors, including how much of the body is affected by symptoms, how soon treatments are administered, and the patient's personal medical history. The following are mortality rates associated with different stages of Stevens Johnson Syndrome:

• When less than 10 percent of the body surface area (BSA) is affected, the condition is fatal between 1 and 5 percent of the time
• When more than 30 percent of BSA is affected, the mortality rate skyrockets to between 25 and 35 percent

While most patients recover from this condition, in the worst cases, Stevens Johnson Syndrome can leave them with permanent disfigurement of the skin, blindness or loss of taste/smell (Loss of the senses is due to the fact that lesions and other symptoms are most likely to affect the mouth, eyes and nose because these regions have a particularly high concentration of mucus membranes).

Leading Causes of Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Sometimes it is difficult to determine the cause of the condition. Some of the known SJS causes, however, include:

• Certain types of cancer
• Cocaine usage
• Exposure to radiation therapy or ultraviolet light
• Side effects of certain medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, anti-seizure drugs such as Dilantin, penicillin, anti-gout medications, etc.
• Viral infections, such as herpes, HIV, diphtheria, typhoid, hepatitis and influenza
