The symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome are so severe, doctors will usually require hospitalization for adequate treatment.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a serious skin disease in which the two outer-most layers of the skin separate from each other, causing extremely painful symptoms. While the onset of the disease causes general symptoms, such as fever, sore throat and nausea, as the condition progresses it causes blisters, hives, lesions, skin pain and sloughing (shedding of the dead skin cells). Each year nearly 100,000 Americans die from Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
In most cases, symptoms are particularly prevalent and intense around areas that contain mucous membranes, such as the mouth, nose and eyes. When such signs and symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome cover more than 30 percent of a patient's body, the condition is then referred to as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS).
Unfortunately, most cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome are idiopathic, meaning that their causes are indeterminable and the condition arises spontaneously.
Some patients develop Stevens Johnson Syndrome due to a severe reaction to a medication. Some of the medications that have reportedly been linked to the condition include:
Currently, the drug companies that produce these medications are not required by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to carry a warning label regarding the possibility of developing SJS or TENS as a severe side effect. The FDA and drug companies have responded to advocates' claims that these conditions are so rare that no warning is necessary or important.
To determine whether a patient is suffering from Stevens Johnson Syndrome, doctors will most likely:
Upon an official diagnosis, patients will need to begin treatments immediately for the best chances of survival. Most patients will require hospitalization for weeks and are generally first admitted to burn centers or intensive care units. Treatments for Stevens Johnson Syndrome may include:
Additionally, it will be crucial that patients stop using any medications they were taking upon their diagnosis.
