Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a severe, potentially life-threatening condition. It causes a spreading red to purple rash on the skin, the outer layer of the skin to separate from the layers below, and blisters to break out on the mucous membranes (including those of the mouth, nose and eyes). Sometimes, there is so much scarring of the membranes of the eyes, the syndrome can lead to blindness.
Dilantin is a drug used to treat epilepsy. There are times when Stevens Johnson Syndrome can be traced to the use of Dilantin. The condition is a medical emergency that needs immediate attention, usually hospitalization. The loss of skin leaves the patient especially prone to infection and loss of fluids.
Toxic epidermal necrolysis is another form of the same syndrome.
If a person experiences these symptoms, it is essential they receive immediate medical attention. They will often be hospitalized, usually in the burn unit, which is best equipped to deal with the loss of skin and replacement of fluids.
The condition is usually a result of a reaction to a variety of drugs. These may include anticonvulsants such as Dilantin, sulfa antibiotics, barbiturates and some steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The syndrome usually occurs in older people, most likely because they take more medication than other people do. However, it can occur at any age. It also occurs in people with AIDS.
If you or someone you love has had SJS and you have taken Dilantin, our Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawyers can help you explore your options for filing a lawsuit to compensate you for your injuries, pain and suffering. Please call us to find out how we can help. Toll free (800) 481-7430.
