No. Stevens Johnson Syndrome is not contagious. People do not get Stevens Johnson Syndrome from other people, but most often from reactions to certain medications.

The syndrome is a rare and serious disorder of the skin that is potentially life threatening. It may be caused by the body’s immune system reacting to certain medications, including

• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil or Motrin
• Drugs to treat epilepsy, such as Dilantin
• Antibacterial medications that are based on penicillin or sulfa
• A medication used to treat pain and inflammation, Bextra

How It Begins

The first signs resemble those of the flu or a cold:

• Headache
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Body aches
• Cough

These symptoms are followed by the more serious manifestations of the disorder. They may include:

• A rash that is flat, red, and purple and spreads over days, but sometimes over a period of hours; the rash often looks like an irregular target with a darker center.
• Swelling of the face and tongue
• Painful skin over much of the body
• Skin that peels off easily, opening the way to infection
• Blisters appearing in the mouth, nose, and eyes
• Scarring of the eyes that can result in blindness

Though the condition is rare and often difficult to diagnose Stevens Johnson Syndrome in its early stages, it is important to begin treatment as soon as possible for the best chances of recovery. Patients with a severe form of the disease need to be hospitalized, preferably in a burn unit so that the skin can be properly cared for and necessary fluids can be given.
