Prevention of silicosis is fairly simple, but many employers do not follow the simple guidelines for the prevention of silicosis in their workforce. Because no cure is as yet available for this condition, the prevention of silicosis is of paramount importance. Silicosis is caused by inhaling silica dust; therefore the key to prevention of silicosis is keeping the dust from becoming airborne. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires prevention of silicosis through administrative and engineering controls.

One example of the simple controls for prevention of silicosis is using a water hose to keep dust wet at the point of generation. Prevention of silicosis also depends upon the use of dust collection systems and proper ventilation at work sites. For prevention of silicosis among individuals who work directly with silica-containing materials, respirators provide significant assistance with the prevention of silicosis, although respirators should not be the primary source of protection.

In addition to the prevention of silicosis through safeguards, workers who are exposed to silica dust should get regular medical examinations. The prevention of silicosis is widely considered the duty of the employer, and if insufficient steps are taken for prevention of silicosis, the employer may liable when the condition develops in employees.
