The Stryker Pain Pump 1 is a disposable pain-management device. It uses a vacuum-driven pump and a catheter to deliver pain medication to the shoulder, knee or ankle after arthroscopic surgery. By delivering a non-narcotic agent such as lidocaine or bupivacaine, the Stryker Pain Pump 1 enables a patient to forego or reduce the use of narcotics after surgery.
The Stryker Pain Pump 1 comes with two different-sized pumps: 120 mL and 270 mL. A patient can use it at home, wearing it around the house during post-surgery recovery. When the patient’s pain has subsided, the Stryker Pain Pump 1 is removed and disposed of.
Unfortunately, the Stryker Pain Pump 1 is among a group of medical devices that have been linked to a debilitating, painful condition called post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis (PAGCL). An alarming number of patients who underwent surgery on the shoulder joint and then received a pain pump such as the Stryker Pain Pump 1 have developed PAGCL.
PAGCL destroys the cartilage of the shoulder joint, leaving an individual with a limited range of motion and constant pain. The treatment options for PAGCL are merely palliative; that is, they help alleviate the pain, but they don’t cure the condition. Pain medication and further shoulder surgery are the only options that may afford some relief from PAGCL incurred after the use of a Stryker Pain Pump 1 or similar device.
Contact a law firm that represents individuals and families hurt by defective medical devices if you’ve been treated with a Stryker Pain Pump 1 and have concerns about the outcome. If you’ve been diagnosed with PAGCL or suspect that you have PAGCL, you may be eligible for financial compensation for your losses.
