The symptoms of PAGCL (post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis) are often very severe. They may not appear until months after a patient’s shoulder surgery, and once the symptoms of PAGCL appear, they may be untreatable.
Ironically, the symptoms of PAGCL are very often the exact same symptoms the patient sought the shoulder surgery for in the first place, and they can be far worse. Symptoms of PAGCL include:
These symptoms follow the deterioration (chondrolysis) of the cartilage in the glenohumeral joint — that is, the ball-and-socket shoulder joint. A patient with PAGCL may experience one, several, or all of these symptoms to varying degrees. A PAGCL sufferer will nearly always need treatment or pain medication.
PAGCL symptoms can be extremely painful. There is no sure cure for this devastating disease. In addition, PAGCL can affect joints other than the shoulder: the ankles, knees and hips. An individual with PAGCL may require a replacement of the affected joint (arthroplasty), necessitating a significant surgery that has its own risks and possible complications.
Although the original arthroscopic surgery may have been an outpatient surgery with local anesthesia, a joint replacement surgery will be a much more extensive procedure, requiring a stay in the hospital and months of physical rehabilitation. Even so, the joint replacement may not improve the symptoms of PAGCL.
If the symptoms of PAGCL are mild enough, a patient may be able to get sufficient relief with anti-inflammatory medication. However, he or she may need to take such medication indefinitely.
