The On-Q Painbuster Post-Op Pain Relief System is a product designed to infuse a painkilling medication through a catheter to a site in the body. The On-Q Painbuster is prescribed by surgeons to patients who have had procedures such as knee surgery, Cesarean sections, and arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
The On-Q Painbuster has been linked to a terrible condition called post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolyis (PAGCL), a cartilage-destroying, permanent injury that is very painful. The development of PAGCL is an ironic and devastating outcome associated with a medical device meant to alleviate pain, not cause it.
Distributed by the California-based I-Flow Corporation, the On-Q Painbuster is available in four models, all of which are single-use and disposable:
ON-Q: has a fixed flow rate. Comes in single-, dual- and triple-site configurations
ON-Q with ONDEMAND: gives a continuous infusion and allows fixed boluses of medication to be delivered on demand
ON-Q with Select-A-Flow: has an adjustable rate controller that allows the user to adjust the flow of medication
ON-Q with Select-A-Flow and ONDEMAND: includes the rate controller and the bolus device
Each model can be used to infuse a local anesthetic to the surgical site(s) for up to five days. Pain pumps such as the On-Q Painbuster are prescribed to deliver non-narcotic agents such as:
A 2006 study released by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons described the link between pain pump use after arthroscopic shoulder surgery and the development of PAGCL. Twelve of 152 arthroscopic shoulder-surgery patients examined in a three-year period developed PAGCL ( i.e., about eight percent of the patients). The only factor that these 12 patients had in common was their treatment with a shoulder pain pump.
If your doctor prescribed an On-Q Painbuster pain pump for you after surgery and you have developed PAGCL, get in touch with a shoulder pain pump lawyer who represents individuals who’ve been harmed by these defective medical devices and learn about your legal options.
According to recent reports, patients who had surgery for dislocated shoulders are saying the product they used to control the pain caused more harm than good.
Many patients have reported that in trying to ease their pain us...
