A link between shoulder pain pumps and cartilage damage was recently revealed. Shoulder pain pumps have been used to treat post-operative pain in patients who have undergone arthroscopic surgery. Although the pumps are designed to relieve pain, some shoulder pain pumps have caused a condition that causes life-long pain due to cartilage damage.
The shoulder pain pumps’ cartilage damage is more accurately known as post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis (PAGCL). The glenohumeral is the joint at the end of the shoulder comprised of the ball of the arm bone and the socket of the shoulder blade. PAGCL makes the cartilage deteriorate, and the bones that used to be protected by the cartilage start to grind against each other, causing pain.
A decreased range of motion, popping or cracking of the shoulder joint, and weakness in the joint are also possible outcomes of the shoulder pain pump treatment. The symptoms of PAGCL can become very severe, and may not be treatable; they may even become permanent. All of this is of course an unexpected and traumatic outcome after the use of a medical device that is marketed as an effective pain-relief measure.
Shoulder pain pumps are often prescribed after a shoulder arthroscopy procedure or shoulder surgery. The arthroscopy may be used simply to help diagnose a shoulder problem. Shoulder surgery may be performed arthroscopically or not; the use of the shoulder pain pump does not depend on the surgical method.
The shoulder pain pumps (which come in a variety of models) infuse pain medication through a catheter to the affected site over a period of a few days. Several researchers are now of the opinion that the risk presented by shoulder pain pumps for cartilage damage outweighs the potential benefit for pain relief.
Several shoulder pain pump class action lawsuits have already been initiated regarding shoulder pain pumps and cartilage damage. If you fear or know that cartilage damage has resulted from your treatment with a shoulder pain pump, contact a qualified pain pump lawyer to represent your legal interests.
According to recent reports, patients who had surgery for dislocated shoulders are saying the product they used to control the pain caused more harm than good.
Many patients have reported that in trying to ease their pain us...
