Seroquel is an atypical or second generation antipsychotic. Used to treat psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, Seroquel is thought to work by blocking neurotransmitter sites of serotonin and dopamine, in addition to muscarinic and alpha-adrenergic and histamine receptors. Still, Seroquel has yet to be any more effective in treating the positive or negative symptoms than older antipsychotics.
As far back as the 1970s it has been known that switching women from the first generation antipsychotics to second generation puts them at an increased risk for unwanted pregnancies. Since 1993, reports of these unwanted pregnancies amongst second generation antipsychotic users like Seroquel have been accumulating, though the FDA was criticized for failing to require a warning be issued for this effect. Especially since the practice of switching patients from first generation to second generation antipsychotics became a common occurrence with its growing popularity, it was estimated that tens of thousands or more women of childbearing age may have been at risk for unwanted pregnancies because of the unknown risk.
Seroquel can have some very serious adverse effects such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, fatal heatstroke, and tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia has no effective treatment that may only be reversible in its early stages. The use of Seroquel was also shown to cause cataracts in animals, requiring Seroquel patients to have an eye examination every six months to detect cataract formation.
While Seroquel has been shown to be an effective drug treatment for some patients, there are a lot of very serious and sometimes deadly effects. All patients should fully consider its'' risks verses its'' benefits before deciding if Seroquel is the right treatment plan.
