A Serevent lawsuit can be filed against the makers of this prescription drug on behalf of people who have suffered Serevent-related adverse events. A Serevent lawsuit is filed in the civil courts as a product liability personal injury (tort) lawsuit. Through a Serevent lawsuit, patients may be eligible to recover damages including those related to medical expenses, loss of income, and psychological suffering.
In 2004 the FDA listed Serevent as one of the top five most dangerous prescription drugs available on the United States market. Serevent is produced by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA first approved Serevent in 1994 to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). This drug is not intended to treat the acute symptoms of asthma nor is it designed to replace anti-inflammatory drugs like inhaled corticosteroids.
In 1996, the 28 week SMART clinical trial was conducted to study the effects of Serevent on patients with asthma as compared to those taking a placebo. The study was cut short after researchers found that patients were suffering severe Serevent reactions at an alarming rate. At least thirty six patients in this GlaxoSmithKline-sponsored clinical study died as a result of serious asthma-related complications. African American patients taking Serevent were three times more likely to suffer fatal side effects compared to participants taking a dummy pill. Patients who were not concurrently taking an inflammatory fighting corticosteroid were also at an increased risk of suffering fatal asthma complications.
Despite knowledge of these serious Serevent side effects, the drug’s maker has taken no steps to adequately protect patients from these risks. The FDA responded to clinical trial evidence by ordering the pharmaceutical company to include a black box warning on all product information for Serevent. A Serevent black box warning is the strongest warning the FDA could mandate, short of pulling this drug off the market.
GlaxoSmithKline has yet to actually include a black box warning on their patient product information. The company has included warnings on some of their product information to caution patients about the potentially deadly side effects their product can cause. The company also warns patients that Serevent can cause patients to develop high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, and heart arrhythmia. Serevent is also contraindicated in patients with a history of heart problems, those with high blood pressure, and patients currently taking MAOIs and tricyclic antidepressants. Serevent has not been tested in patients with a history of renal or hepatic impairments.
