Serevent Diskus is the brand name of an asthma-relief product manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Designed for daily use, Serevent Diskus is used in combination with a long-term preventer to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. Serevent Diskus controls the symptoms of asthma and is classified as a long acting bronchodilator. Glaxo advertises that patients using Serevent Diskus can expect up to twelve hours of relief from chest tightness and wheeze due to asthma and other chest conditions. Although Serevent Diskus has proven extremely popular with asthma sufferers, in a recent study three times more patients taking Serevent died of asthma-related causes than patients using an alternate medication.
The United States Food and Drug Administration has required that GlaxoSmithKline include a black box warning on Serevent Diskus in the wake of a study run by Glaxo that produced some shocking results. Thirty six participants in the study who were using Serevent Diskus to treat their asthma symptoms experienced life-threatening asthma episodes, including several deaths. Some of the patients using Serevent Diskus experienced such severe difficulty in breathing that they required intubation to reopen their airways. The risk to African-American users appears to be greater than to that of other races, although the study was cut short when the increased number of deaths became known.
The FDA approved Serevent Diskus for use in 1994 to treat asthma, with a later extension of the approval to include the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The active drug, salmeterol, which has been tentatively identified as the cause of the complications, is also included in Advair, another asthma medication manufactured by Glaxo. Although the FDA has required that Glaxo disclose the risk of death to users of Serevent Diskus in both advertising and in print on the medicine''s packaging, no such warning exists as of December 2003, and there is no known date that such a warning will appear.
If you are currently using Serevent Diskus, you should not alter or cease your treatment plan without first consulting a physician. Many patients have benefited from the use of this drug, but you may wish to discuss alternative treatments with your doctor. If you or a loved one has suffered adverse side effects or death as a result of using Serevent Diskus, Glaxo may be accountable, and you may be entitled to recover all costs associated with medical treatment, hospital and funeral expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. An attorney who has experience representing the victims of Serevent Diskus may be able to help you determine if any legal action is necessary, and if so, what the most effective course to take would be.
