There are dangerous and deadly side effects of Risperdal, including stroke and stroke-like events like blood clots and hemorrhages. More than ten million people have used Risperdal, but the Risperdal makers just issued a warning on April 10, 2003 that there is a higher risk of suffering side effects of Risperdal like stroke or stroke-like events in elderly Risperdal patients. Many elderly Risperdal patients are prescribed Risperdal for symptoms other than schizophrenia or psychotic illnesses.

The side effects of Risperdal are so serious that many people wonder why Risperdal is so heavily prescribed to treat things that were not FDA approved. In particular, Public Citizen consumer group find the side effects of Risperdal to be so grave that they believe more research needs to be performed to better assess the side effects of Risperdal in younger patients. The side effects of Risperdal are hurting people that could be using alternate medications, and according to a Public Citizen pharmacist and research analyst Larry Sasich, “it looks like doctors are hurting people by prescribing it for this condition,” when referring to the use of Risperdal for dementia.

Since the side effects of Risperdal are most likely to occur in elderly patients, the recent Risperdal warning may allow for safer alternatives to be given to Alzheimer’s disease and for treating delusions, aggression, and anxiety. There are no studies indicating the risk of suffering side effects of Risperdal in children, however more and more psychiatrists are giving Risperdal to treat behavioral and conduct disorders. Some experts are unsure of why doctors continue to risk lasting side effects of Risperdal by giving children such a powerful drug.
