A Risperdal lawsuit is the legal recourse available to parties who have been injured as a result of taking this anti-psychotic prescription medication. Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic approved by the FDA to treat schizophrenia and the mania associated with bipolar disorder. Risperdal is also prescribed for a number of off-label uses including behavioral disorders in the elderly population, conduct problems is children, anxiety, and autism.
Johnson and Johnson, the makers of Risperdal, enjoy over $2.1 billion in revenue as a result of over ten million prescriptions administered worldwide. Risperdal is touted as an anti-psychotic with a lowered risk of side effects and adverse health reactions compared to other drugs of its class. Risperdal has been shown to effectively treat the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and mania in bipolar patients. This drug is recommended for short-term treatment of these symptoms and is not intended to cure these ailments.
Two major statements have been issued concerning serious adverse side effects associated with taking Risperdal. The first came in April 2003, when reports indicated that elderly patients taking Risperdal have an increased risk of suffering from cerebrovascular problems, including stroke. This warning statement followed J &J''s foreign public disclosure about this health risk in October 2002.
A second major report regarding the safety of Risperdal came in July 2004, when the drug''s manufacture was required by the FDA to issue a warning about the complications associated with Risperdal use. Risperdal, and other drugs of its class, have been shown to cause hyperglycemia which can lead to ketoacidosis, coma and even death. Patients who have diabetes mellitus, or are at risk for developing this condition, should undergo a glucose fasting test prior to initiating Risperdal treatment, and should have their blood-sugar levels closely monitored throughout their treatment.
Other serious side effects that have been associated with Risperdal include Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome and tardive dyskinesia. Other common side effects that can cause injury include: dizziness, rapid heart beat, fainting, seizures, trouble swallowing, cognitive impairment, increased levels of prolactin in the body (causing gynecomastia), painful penile erection, suicidal thoughts, vision problems and uncontrollable motor movements. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Risperdal, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. The effects of Risperdal use on children and pregnant or lactating women have not been sufficiently evaluated for safety.
A Risperdal lawsuit can be filed by patients who have suffered adverse health problems as a result of taking this medication. A Risperdal lawsuit is a civil case whereby the victim seeks compensation for their losses including medical expenses, the loss of income or earning abilities, and pain and suffering. A Risperdal lawsuit is best pursued with the help of a product liability legal specialist with experience in helping people receive compensation for injuries sustained as a result of taking an unsafe drug.
Janssen Pharmaceutic Products, the makers of the anti-psychotic drug Risperdal, sent a letter to the health care community outlining the potential health risks associated with the medication.
