Reglan is prescribed to patients to alleviate the symptoms of nausea and heartburn that are associated with pregnancy, chemotherapy and acid reflux, to name a few conditions. Consisting of metoclopramide, Reglan helps the nausea subside so that the patient can live a normal life. Each year, it is prescribed to thousands of patients who unwittingly take it, assuming that it is completely safe. Due to reported injuries caused by the medication, the FDA required a black box warning on all Reglan. It is important to note that there has not been a Reglan recall.
There are side effects associated with Reglan. Typical Reglan side effects include:
Taking Reglan increases the risk of the most serious side effect of all, the development of the condition, tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia is a neurological disorder defined by involuntary movements of the limbs and face. A patient’s risk for the condition increases the longer the drug is taken. The amount of the dosage is also a factor as the higher the dose the stronger the risk. In many cases, the symptoms of the condition remain even after the patient stops taking the medication. While the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia can be treated, the condition has no cure, with symptoms appearing and disappearing over the patient’s lifetime.
Some patients who have taken Reglan have suffered with symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. Enough patients suffered from the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia to raise the attention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who required a black box warning on all medications containing metoclopramide, including Reglan. Though the FDA issued a serious warning about the drug, Reglan’s manufacturer has yet to issue a recall.
If you or a loved one have suffered from the adverse effects of Reglan, it is important to contact an Reglan recall attorney experienced in these types of cases who can fight for the compensation you deserve.
