Reglan is a medication prescribed to patients to alleviate nausea and to treat conditions such as heartburn caused by acid reflux disorder. Comprised of metoclopramise, it is a serious antiemetic that is has been linked to the development of tardive dyskinesia, a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements of the limbs and face. An overdose of Reglan can have dangerous side effects.
Like any prescription medication, Reglan can have serious side effects when taken in large amounts. According to the dosage guidelines, if you miss a dose, it is important to take it as soon as you remember. However, do not double up your doses to make up for a missed dose. If you happen to remember the missing dose near the time of your regular dose, take your regular dose as usual and don’t bother with the missing one.
If you double up your doses of Reglan, you may experience the signs of an overdose. Contact the poison control center or the emergency room immediately.
Symptoms of a Reglan overdose include drowsiness, disorientation, involuntary movements, muscle tension, and anxiety. The appearance and severity of these symptoms is dependent upon the dosage of Reglan that you took as well as the presence of other medications in your system.
If you overdose on Reglan, it is important to get the emergency room as soon as possible. Medical professionals will assess the situation, taking into account how much was taken and the other medications present in your system to decide a course of action. Often this involves pumping the stomach, using a tube to suction the contents of the stomach out before the substance gets to the small intestine, where absorption occurs.
The doctor may also give you another type of medication to address any involuntary movements you have, muscle tension, and anxiety. You may also be given and intravenous fluids (IV) to keep your electrolytes and body chemicals in balance while your system deals with the excess Reglan.
It is important to note that any increase in the dosage of Reglan can put you at risk for developing tardive dyskinesia. If you have experienced the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia due to an overdose of Reglan, it is important to contact your physician. While there is no cure, in many cases the symptoms can be treated.
