Reglan is a prescription drug used to alleviate nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately, the active ingredient, metoclopramide, is associated with the incurable and irreversible neurological disorder tardive dyskinesia. Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia include uncontrollable movements of the arms, legs, and face. This is associated with the permanent nerve damage that occurs due to long-term or high dosage use.
Neuropathy is a significant side effect of Reglan. Affecting mostly elderly women, the condition is also reported in younger patients. Since Reglan is prescribed to infants with digestive disorders, babies are beginning to exhibit symptoms of tardive dyskinesia.
There is no cure for tardive dyskinesia. Though symptoms can come and go throughout a patient’s lifetime, treatment includes medication to control the movements and spasms of the limbs and face whenever the condition resurfaces. A lifetime of treatment includes a lifetime of ever-increasing medical bills. These bills can overwhelm a patient financially.
In addition, many patients are prescribed Reglan to help them alleviate nausea associated with gastric reflux, pregnancy and the effects of chemotherapy — all conditions that last a relatively short time. Imagine dealing with a debilitating neurological condition, characterized by uncontrollable spasms, for the rest of your life all because you took a medication that you assumed was safe to control your nausea? It doesn’t seem like a fair trade-off.
Reglan caught the attention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with studies showing an direct correlation between Reglan and serious neurological disorders such as tardive dyskinesia. In fact, the FDA now requires the manufacturer to have a black box warning on every prescription bottle of Reglan, notifying patients of the potential risk of severe and irreversible nerve damage when the drug is taken over a long period of time or in high doses.
There is help for patients who have tardive dyskinesia and serious neurological damage due to taking Reglan. For information about your specific injury and circumstances, it is important to contact a qualified Regaln injury attorney as soon as possible.
