Metoclopramide is the generic version of Reglan®. Used to treat heartburn, the medication works by increasing contractions of the muscles in a patient’s upper digestive tract. This provides short-term relief of heartburn that is caused by gastroesophageal reflux, as it speeds up the rate at which the stomach releases into the intestines. Metoclopramide may also be used in the treatment of diabetes patients who suffer from slow gastric emptying, or for cancer patients who experience nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy.
In addition to Reglan®, Metoclopramide is sold under additional brand names, including:
Metoclopramide is an oral medication that should only be taken as directed by a doctor. Patients will usually be advised to take the medication 30 minutes before eating a meal, for best results. The exact dose will vary from patient to patient and will depend on the severity of the condition as well as a patient’s reaction to the drug. It is important for patients to only take as directed; a higher dose than recommended could put a patient at risk of suffering an ill side effect.
Metoclopramide has been associated with serious, life-changing Reglan® side effects, particularly in patients who use the medication for long periods of time. One of the most serious side effects of metoclopramide is a disorder marked by uncontrolled movements in the muscles, called tardive dyskinesia.
Stop taking the medication if you experience the following side effects:
Patients who take Reglan® (metoclopramide) may be at risk of developing tardive dyskinesia (TD), a disorder that causes uncontrolled movements in the face, the tongue, mouth or jaw. Uncontrolled movements of the arms or legs may also be a side effect. It is important for patients to understand the signs and symptoms of tardive dyskinesia before taking metoclopramide. If you or someone you love is taking the heartburn medication and experienced any symptoms of TD, you should stop taking it and immediately visit your doctor.
The effects can be permanent. Patients who develop tardive dyskinesia, or another serious and lasting side effect, as a result of taking metoclopramide may be entitled to financial compensation. Should the effects be long term, the patient may experience a decreased quality of life and other losses. Compensation for these losses may be sought via a defective drug lawsuit. Our experienced personal injury lawyers can help you seek compensation for the losses you’ve incurred. People who have a history of the following should not take metoclopramide:
Before taking metoclopramide, patients should tell their doctors if they have a history of liver or kidney disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes or depression. Patients are also advised to provide their doctors with a complete list of all the other medications they are taking before starting a course of Reglan® or other drugs containing metoclopramide. Certain drugs may react negatively if taken with metoclopramide.
If you have taken metoclopramide and believe that it has caused you harm, you may wish to speak with an attorney to find out if you have a legal claim.
