An antiemetic prescribed for those with symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Reglan medication helps the stomach to digest quickly and smoothly.
The active ingredient in Reglan is metoclopramide, a powerful, water soluble compound that stimulates the upper part of the digestive tract — the esophagus and upper stomach — to process food without inducing nausea or acid reflux.
While Reglan effectively helps those who suffer from GERD, diabetes, or another medical condition to alleviate the discomfort associated with acid reflux and nausea, it can also cause serious side effects. These side effects include depression and tardive dyskinesia, a serious and debilitating nerve condition.
Reglan has been given to infants suffering from the symptoms of GERD. It’s common for babies to have uneasy stomachs or spit up after eating; however, babies with GERD have difficulty with digestion long after they should have outgrown this tendency. Though physicians have prescribed Reglan for infants as an off-label use, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never approved this use. As a result, more children are now diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia (TD).
For many years, Reglan was prescribed to pregnant women to treat symptoms of morning sickness. It is also prescribed to patients suffering from symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis, a condition that impairs a person’s ability to digest food quickly and efficiently. As mentioned above, it is used to treat infants and adults with GERD.
The prescribed dosage for the Reglan is between 5mg and 20mg. Doses above 20mg are not advised as research concerning dosages at this level is associated with depression and tardive dyskinesia. The FDA has ordered that a black box warning concerning the serious side effects of Reglan must be posted on every label of the drug. This warning advises patients of the consequences of taking Reglan in large doses over an extended period of time. If you must take Reglan, take it as directed by your physician for the shortest amount of time possible and in low doses.
If Reglan is responsible for your suffering from the debilitating side effects of tardive dyskinesia, contact a qualified Reglan medication attorney immediately. Your attorney may be able to get you the damages for which you are entitled.
