Reglan is a powerful antiemetic manufactured by Baxter Pharmaceutical. It is commonly prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and nausea associated with pregnancy and chemotherapy treatments. Though it relieves nausea, its active ingredient — metoclopramide — is associated with a serious, often debilitating, movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia is a serious neurological disorder that is not only embarrassing to those who suffer from it, but can also cause long-term damage, not only physically, but also the patient’s bank account. Since there is no cure for the condition, victims must incur treatments to stifle the effects and allow them to lead a normal life.
Reglan is a potent drug. Other side effects of Reglan include:
Though these side effects may subside over time, the longer a patient takes Reglan, the risk of the involuntary movement disorder, tardive dyskinesia, increases. This risk also increases if the patient takes Reglan in high doses, even if for a short period of time. The increased exposure to the dangerous active ingredient, metoclopramide, increases the risk for irreversible neurological damage.
Involuntary movement of the limbs and/or face is the characteristic symptom of tardive dyskinesia. Reglan caused this disorder in patients in clinical studies. The number of people affected was large enough to catch the attention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, who required the manufacturer to add a black box warning to the labeling of the drug. A black box warning is the most serious warning the FDA issues, requiring that the label explicitly state the negative and serious side effects associated with the medication.
Patients who’ve taken Reglan who are, as a consequence, suffering from the devastating effects of tardive dyskinesia have contacted personal injury lawyers and filed lawsuits against the manufacturer. Some patients have joined others and formed class-action suits, while others have filed personal lawsuits. The right choice for you can be determined by a qualified Reglan lawyer.
If you or a loved one has suffered from the effects of tardive dyskinesia due to taking Reglan, you don’t have to suffer alone. Contact a qualified personal injury attorney who will fight to get you the compensation you deserve.
