Reglan injections can be performed intravenously or intramuscularly, for a variety of symptoms and indications, including:
Reglan injections are available as five-milligram dosages of the active ingredient, metoclopramide hydrochloride, in several sizes of single-dose vials: 2 mL, 10 mL and 30 mL. Each milliliter of solution for injection contains 5 mg of metoclopramide. The dose used will depend in part on the weight of the patient (i.e., mg/kg). The usual adult dose for the prevention of postoperative nausea is 10 mg.
The timing of the effects of a Reglan injection depends on how the injection is administered. The metoclopramide in a Reglan injection will start taking action about 1 to 3 minutes after an intravenous (i.v.) injection, approx. 10–15 minutes after an intramuscular (i.m.) injection and about 30 to 60 minutes after an oral dose (Reglan tablet) is taken.
The metoclopramide is well absorbed by a human or animal, and its effects last roughly one to two hours.
An i.v. injection of Reglan or Reglan diluted in a solution (such as saline) should be done slowly. If a Reglan injection is done too quickly, the patient may experience intense feelings of restlessness and/or anxiety, followed by fatigue.
Reglan injections can also be done subcutaneously — that is, under the skin, in the fatty tissue just beneath the skin. This route for a Reglan injection is used more commonly in animals being treated for vomiting.
