Reglan is a medication with dangerous side effects associated with it. Although doctors often prescribe this drug to ease nausea and other symptoms of acid reflux, one of Reglan’s side effects is a risk of tardive dyskinesia (TD). TD is a serious neurological disorder with a primary symptom of uncontrollable movements.
Patients who suffer with tardive dyskinesia must endure embarrassing and uncomfortable twitching, jerking, and spasms of the legs, arms, and face. Symptoms come and go throughout a patient’s lifetime. While movements can be controlled with medication, the patient must live their lives not knowing when the next cycle of symptoms will appear.
Though its active ingredient, metoclopramide, received FDA approval over 20 years ago, studies have shown a direct correlation between this powerful antiemetic and the neurological condition, tardive dyskinesia. The risk for this condition increases with the amount and length of time prescribed.
When there is a risk of a patient developing a serious condition as the result of taking a particular drug with a dangerous chemical, the Food and Drug Administration issues a warning about the drug and the possibility of the condition to educate patients and doctors about the possible consequences of taking the drug.
This warning is issued regardless of whether the drug is FDA approved or not. Called a Black Box Warning, this warning from the FDA must be affixed to each bottle of prescription medication with the dangerous ingredient. Since Reglan is available in tablet, syrup and injection forms, this warning must be on every container of the medication to warn patients of the possible risk.
The FDA approved the use of metoclopramide in 1985 as a prokinetic drug, that is one that stimulates the muscles of the lower esophagus, stomach and intestine, preventing acid reflux, nausea and other symptoms associated with gastrointestinal disorders. The drug basically speeds up digestion from the lower esophagus into the small intestine.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia after taking Reglan, you need experienced legal representation to help you during your time of need. Contact an expert Reglan attorney with experience in dangerous drug lawsuits will be able to get you the compensation you deserve.
