Reglan is an antiemetic prescribed to alleviate the nausea and vomiting that goes along with gastrointestinal disorders as well as for the nausea that comes with pregnancy and as a reaction to chemotherapy. While it relieves this symptom, it unfortunately bears some unsightly side effects including a risk of Reglan tardive dyskinesia. This is the primary reason that the Reglan bears a black box warning label.
Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder in which the muscles of the limbs and face twitch and move uncontrollably, leading to embarrassment, frustration, anxiety and depression. The risk of suffering from the symptoms of the condition — uncontrolled movements of the limbs or face — increase the longer the patient takes Reglan. The risk also increases the higher the dosage. Since there is no cure, many patients who suffer from tardive dyskinesia have symptoms that come and go throughout their lives. The symptoms may disappear if the patient either ceases to take the medication or takes it over the short-term and in lower doses.
Reglan side effects run deeper than superficial movements. Since the patient cannot control the movements of their face or limbs, it makes it difficult to communicate with friends and family; hold a job, especially if the position involves precision; and can lead to depression. As a result, medical bills increase and go unpaid as the patient often cannot hold on to steady employment and thus cannot pay the bills.
After analysis, the FDA required makers of the drug to add a black box warning — the strongest warning they require — on its drug label to alert patients of the serious risks that can arise when taking Reglan, or any drug containing metoclopramide. Studies show that the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia occur in 20 percent of patients who take drugs containing metoclopramide, including Reglan.
Tardive dyskinesia affects many patients who have taken Reglan or other antiemetics containing metoclopramide. If you or a loved one has suffered from tardive dyskinesia as a result of taking Reglan or another metoclopramide, consult with an attorney who will be able to get you the compensation you deserve.
