Quinine Side Effects

Quinine toxicity, or cinchonism

About Quinine

Quinine has long been used as a treatment for malaria, and there are, in fact, several FDA approved drugs for this purpose. These quinine-containing drugs come with extensive labels warning of the serious side effects. Because malaria is a potentially fatal disease, the risks associated with taking quinine do not always outweigh the benefits.

However, this is not the case when the drug is used for “off-label” (unapproved) purposes, such as treating leg cramps . In fact, the FDA has deemed quinine-containing products that are marketed for treating leg cramps or other conditions ineffective and unsafe and has ordered an end to their manufacture.
