About Quinine
Quinine has long been used as a treatment for malaria, and there are, in fact, several FDA approved drugs for this purpose. These quinine-containing drugs come with extensive labels warning of the serious side effects. Because malaria is a potentially fatal disease, the risks associated with taking quinine do not always outweigh the benefits.
However, this is not the case when the drug is used for “off-label” (unapproved) purposes, such as treating leg cramps . In fact, the FDA has deemed quinine-containing products that are marketed for treating leg cramps or other conditions ineffective and unsafe and has ordered an end to their manufacture.
When To Contact A Physician
Individuals who experience any of the following quinine side effects or symptoms should consult with a physician immediately:
Upset stomach or stomach pain
Vomiting
Dizziness or faintness
Chest pain or rapid heart rate
Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
Changes in hearing or vision
Facial swelling
Fever
Confusion
When To Contact An Attorney
If you or someone you love has suffered a life-threatening quinine side effect, you need to ensure your legal rights are fully protected. You may be able to take legal action against the product's maker to recover compensation for your losses. In cases where quinine is suspected of causing an individual's death, the victim's family members may be able to take legal action on their loved one's behalf.
