Between 1969 and late 2006, the Food and Drug Administration received reports of 93 quinine-related deaths and 665 other adverse events with serious outcomes. Based on the severity and frequency of these quinine side effects , the FDA ordered the makers of unapproved quinine containing products to cease their manufacture.
Unapproved Quinine Products
Unapproved quinine drugs have been marketed primarily for the treatment of leg cramps , although some products advertised other uses. Unlike FDA approved quinine drugs—which are used for treating and preventing malaria—unapproved products contained no warnings as to the serious risk of quinine death and other dangerous side effects.
If someone you love suffered a quinine-related death, you may be entitled to take legal action against the product's maker on your loved one's behalf. Contact us today to learn more.
What Causes Quinine Deaths?
According to the FDA, unapproved quinine drugs have been linked to a number of adverse events—some of which result in quinine deaths. These adverse events include:
Kidney failure
Thrombocytopenia, which can lead to hemorrhaging
Anaphylaxis
Cardiac arrhythmias
Overdose
The FDA also cited numerous other quinine side effects, which include visual disturbances, hearing problems, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and severe skin and hypersensitivity reactions.
Not Worth the Risk
The FDA notes that the benefits of quinine drugs outweigh the risks when taken for malaria. When taken for less serious conditions like leg cramps, however, the FDA states that the use of quinine containing drugs cannot be justified. In fact, the FDA concludes that using quinine products—either alone or in combination with vitamin E—is both unsafe and ineffective.
Quinine Death & Your Legal Rights
Those who have taken an unapproved quinine drug and suffered a severe side effect may be able to file a lawsuit against the product's maker to recover damages. This also holds true for those who have lost loved ones due to quinine-related adverse events. If your loved one suffered a quinine death, you may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit to recover compensation for your mental anguish, loss of companionship and other financial and emotional losses.
