drug_recall prozacProzac side effects have been a significant concern throughout this drug''s stay on the market. Prozac was approved in 1986 to treat an array of mental health disorders. Common Prozac side effects include anxiety, sleep troubles, and appetite changes. More serious Prozac side effects include skin reactions, trouble breathing, hallucinating, seizures, and swelling. One of the most serious Prozac side effects is the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in children. The drug''s label carries a strong warning for this Prozac side effect. Prozac use during pregnancy has also shown to be a risk factor for fetal and newborn complications.
A February 2006 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine , provides renewed credence to previous evidence regarding the risk of Prozac side effects on a newborn child. In the most recent study, conducted at the Slone Epidemiological Center, a team of experts has discovered that using Prozac during the third trimester of pregnancy can more than double the chances of delivering a child with PPHN . This is not the first time Prozac (fluoxetine) has been linked to serious fatal Prozac side effects risks.
What is PPHN?
PPHN, or Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn, is a serious and sometimes fatal respiratory condition that can develop within the first few hours or days of a baby''s life. In the general population, one to two infants per 1,000 will develop this condition. Of these children, ten to twenty percent will not survive despite all treatment efforts.
During prenatal development, the baby receives oxygen from her mother via the umbilical cord. The circulatory system is such that blood sent away from the heart by the pulmonary artery is brought back to the heart through the ductus arteriosus, thus bypassing the lungs. When a child is born and the umbilical cord is cut, the child no longer receives oxygen from her mother. Instead, the system must adapt so that the child uses her own lungs to receive oxygen. In a healthy infant, the ductus arteriosus closes up and the blood from the heart pumps to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. In a child with PPHN, the pulmonary artery remains constricted, the ductus arteriosus can remain functional, and the lungs continue to be bypassed by the circulatory system. This prevents adequate oxygen intake, hinders the oxygenation of blood, and consequently the vital organs and tissues become oxygen deprived.
How do I know if my child has developed this Prozac side effect?
A child with PPHN presents symptoms of this condition shortly after birth within a day or two of life. Symptoms of PPHN include respiratory distress (including symptoms like grunting and nostril flaring), rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, a bluish tint to the skin (cyanosis), and rapid breathing. A child should receive immediate medical attention at the first sign of these symptoms. Intubation, mechanical ventilation, and sometimes even surgery are required to treat a newborn with PPHN.
