Have you suffered a wrist fracture while taking Protonix®? If so, you may qualify for a legal claim. Contact us to find out if you qualify to seek compensation for your damages.
For patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD or acid reflux, Protonix® has proven to be beneficial in treating the erosion and ulceration that occurs as a result of the condition. Protonix®, or pantoprazole as it is generically known, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which reduces the amount of acid that the stomach can make and eliminates the discomfort and heartburn that come with GERD.
Though Protonix® relieves symptoms associated with GERD, it also carries the increased risk of serious side effects including headache, weight gain, diarrhea, insomnia, hip fractures, wrist fractures and spine fractures.
Pantoprazole and other drugs that reduce the acid of the stomach have been linked to an increased risk of bone or wrist fractures. Protonix® is one of many heartburn drugs associated with the risk of bone fractures and other associated fractures. While Protonix® reduces stomach acid, over the long term it also reduces the body's ability to absorb calcium, which can increase the risk of fractures to the bones in some patients.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the long-term use of these drugs, particularly in women over the age of 50. The drugs are only meant to be taken for a short period of time and in small doses. Taking the medication in amounts above the recommended dosage can increase the risk of bone fractures.
Protonix® is often prescribed for a total of eight weeks, although it can be extended for another eight weeks. However, taking the medication for longer than 16 weeks can increase the risk of side effects. Fractures were seen mainly in older women, though the side effects can occur in people of all ages. Protonix® is a serious medication with serious side effects that should only be taken ask directed by a physician.
If you or a loved one has experienced a wrist fracture, bone fracture or another adverse side effect while taking Protonix® or pantoprazole, contact our attorneys to schedule a consultation to discuss your case. Only an experienced Protonix® lawyer can get you the compensation you deserve for your injuries.
