What Is Protonix®?

Protonix® is the brand name for a medication that uses the drug pantopraozle to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Protonix® belongs to a classification of drugs commonly referred to as proton pump inhibitors.

There are generic brands of this medication, but Protonix® usually comes in a 40mg oral medicine tablet that is delayed-release and long lasting. Protonix® is developed by Wyeth, part of the Pfizer Incorporated, a large drug manufacturer.

Protonix® Linked To Bone Fractures

There are some side effects that have been linked to the drug, Protonix®. Common Protonix® side effects include diarrhea, headache, stomach pain and bloating with gas. There are some more serious side effects linked to this particular proton pump inhibitor, including an increased risk of bone fractures.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released findings that the heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease medication might cause bone fractures when an overdose or high amount of the drug is consumed.

Among the bone fracture side effects, the FDA warns that Protonix® might increase the chances of:

• Hip fractures
• Wrist fractures
• Spine fractures

Protonix® Vs Prilosec®

While Protonix® and Prilosec® are in the same class of medications, studies have reported that Prilosec® will not immediately treat the symptoms of heartburn in a patient, sometimes taking as long as four days.

Prilosec®, unlike Protonix®, does not utilize pantoprazole as an active ingredient, but uses omeprazole instead. Both of these drugs can have severe side effects if an overdose is taken, including allergic reactions that might require medical assistance.
