Propoxyphene is a narcotic painkiller that has been prescribed in the United States since 1957. Late last year the FDA recalled propoxyphene due to serious health risks posed by the medication. Evidence has shown that users of the drug are at risk of heart attacks, cardiac arrest and death.
If you believe you may have been injured by this medication prior to the propoxyphene recall you should contact one of our propoxyphene lawyers.
The propoxyphene recall affects any product to contain the medication, including generics and the brand name drugs like Darvon® and Darvocet®. Both Darvocet® and Darvon® contain propoxyphene, but differ in that Darvocet® combines it with another painkiller called acetaminophen.
There were concerns about propoxyphene for years, mostly stemming from serious side effects and concerns that people were accidently overdosing on the drug. The side effects included:
Starting in July 2009 the FDA required the drug to carry a "black box" warning on the label informing users of overdose risks. The label stated that people who had previously attempted suicide were dying after using propoxyphene, and that accidental overdoses were also occurring, sometimes due to drug interactions. However, at the time the FDA still considered the drug's benefits to outweigh the side effects and overdose dangers, so propoxyphene was not recalled.
That changed in November 2010 when it was discovered that the painkiller also endangers the normal functions of the heart. Propoxyphene disrupts electrical signals that control the beating of the heart, leading to arrhythmia. The arrhythmia is followed by other serious conditions including heart attacks, heart failure, cardiac arrest, and death.
Our propoxyphene lawyers are currently evaluating cases for pending litigation against the manufacturers of the drug. The propoxyphene recall came too late to protect many users of this dangerous medication. A propoxyphene lawsuit can help you receive compensation for your injuries, including medical costs and payment for your pain and suffering.
If you or a loved one has experienced heart related side effects due to a recalled propoxyphene painkiller, including Darvon® or Darvocet®, you should contact one of our propoxyphene attorneys. In a free consultation you can learn about your options and will determine if a propoxyphene lawsuit is right for you.
