Propoxyphene napsylate is the generic name for a prescription drug that was used to treat mild to moderate pain. Propoxyphene was marketed under the brand name Darvon®, and when mixed with acetaminophen was called Darvocet®. Both brand name drugs and all generics using propoxyphene were recalled last year due to serious dangers from the drug.

Propoxyphene Napsylate

Propoxyphene napsylate has a long history of side effects and possible overdose dangers. Its side effects included damage to the stomach, pancreas, and liver. However, it was propoxyphene's effect on the heart that finally forced the recall in November 2010.

Evidence proved that propoxyphene was disrupting the normal electrical activity of the heart. This disruption led to:

• Congestive heart failure
• Cardiac arrest

Propoxyphene Dosage

The propoxyphene napsylate 100 mg pills were the most commonly prescribed dosage, which could be taken every four hours, with a maximum of 600 mg per day. Exceeding the recommended dosage, whether due to increased tolerance, accidental overdose, or suicide attempt, increased the danger of respiratory failure and death.

In addition, those taking the propoxyphene napsylate 100 mg pills had to be careful to wean themselves off the drug slowly, because regular doses at that level may cause narcotic withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly.

Acetaminophen & Hydrocodone

Propoxyphene napsylate interacts with other drugs in a disparate manner. Its interactions with Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone are good examples. Propoxyphene and acetaminophen work in conjunction to effectively block pain, which is why they were combined in the brand name drug Darvocet®. Hydrocodone, which is a stronger narcotic, will combine effects with propoxyphene and can lead to overdose.

Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone themselves are combined in the brand name drug Vicodin. It is considered to be more powerful than propoxyphene, and is prescribed for moderate to severe pain.
