Merck’s hair loss drug Propecia® has been linked to the development of erectile dysfunction and other sexual side effects in some users.
Erectile dysfunction is the term used to describe a condition in which a man is unable to achieve an erection or maintain an erection that is firm enough to have sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is sometimes called impotence, although the word “impotence” is also used to describe other conditions that get in the way of intercourse, including problems with ejaculation and a low sex drive.
Patients that experience erectile dysfunction can either have a complete inability to get an erection or can have problems sometimes. Other patients might be able to get an erection, but might not be able to keep it firm long enough to have intercourse.
Either way, erectile dysfunction can create emotional stress, interfere with relationships and can decrease a patient’s quality of life. Treating erectile dysfunction will depend on the cause and severity of the condition.
Some patients might be prescribed medication to enhance a natural chemical in the body that relaxes the penis muscles. Other treatment options that might be considered include penis pumps, surgery and implants.
Men that use Propecia® to treat male pattern hair loss are at an increased risk of suffering erectile dysfunction and other sexual side effects. The exact risk is not clear; however, data from a study conducted by an assistant professor of medicine at The George Washington University suggests that some patients might experience persistent and permanent erectile dysfunction after using Propecia®.
In a study that looked at 71 male patients who suffered side effects from Propecia®, 92 percent of the patients said they experienced erectile dysfunction. Most of the patients said they experienced multiple side effects of the drug, and 20 percent said the duration lasted for more than 5 years.
If you’ve suffered erectile dysfunction or other sexual side effects and have used Propecia® hair loss treatment, you should contact an attorney to learn about your rights. You might be eligible for financial compensation for your loss.
Even if it seems awkward to talk about erectile dysfunction, we can help you feel comfortable. We will discuss your circumstances in a free and private consultation and will strive to make you feel comfortable. We believe that Merck should be held liable for these side effects.
