How Popcorn Lung Develops

Microwavable popcorn contains flavor additives which give it the buttery flavor that so many people enjoy. Until recently this flavor additive was almost exclusively diacetyl, a naturally occurring chemical compound created by fermentation. Popcorn factory employees, especially those that tested microwavable varieties, repeatedly inhaled the chemical.

After being inhaled by the popcorn workers diacetyl caused severe irritation in the Bronchioles. Bronchioles, which are small tubes in the lungs, are essential to oxygen transfer to the blood stream. Repeated inflammation from diacetyl leads to scar tissue and blockage of the Bronchioles. There is no reversing the effects of Popcorn Lung once it has developed.

Symptoms and Treatment

Popcorn workers who have been exposed to airborne diacetyl are likely to develop a persistent dry cough and may experience shortness of breath. Many popcorn factory employees who have been diagnosed with Popcorn Lung were initially misdiagnosed with asthma or other respiratory conditions which have similar symptoms. Medical professionals are often required to take a lung biopsy to make a final diagnosis.

When diagnosis is made the treatment of Popcorn Lung is focused on halting the progress of the disease and controlling the symptoms. Corticosteroids and immune system suppressing drugs are used control the inflammation. Unfortunately, there is no way to fully clear Bronchioles that have been blocked by Popcorn Lung. In cases where the disease is very advanced a lung transplant is needed. Left untreated the disease is fatal.
