Jointly distributed by Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb, Plavix is one of the worlds top-selling anti-clotting drugs and is commonly prescribed in conjunction with low-dose aspirin therapy to patients with high-risk factors for heart disease. However, Plavix has been shown to significantly increase the risk of major, potentially life-threatening, gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease.
If you or a loved one has suffered severe gastrointestinal bleeding or other adverse Plavix side effects, you may be eligible to seek compensation for your losses.
Plavix Side Effects: Risks vs. Benefits
Several years ago, physicians began prescribing Plavix as part of the treatment regimen for patients who had suffered a heart attack or who were at high risk of doing so. Soon thereafter, physicians began to more liberally prescribe Plavix along with aspirin to patients with risk factors for heart disease but no history of heart attack or stroke.
Studies showed that among patients with high risk factors but no history of a cardiovascular event, Plavix alone offered NO BENEFIT over standard low-dose-aspirin therapy. In fact, it was found to cause a serious, sometimes fatal, Plavix side effect gastrointestinal bleeding. Twenty two percent of patients with a previous history of gastrointestinal bleeding experienced an adverse gastrointestinal event compared with zero percent of those without a prior history.
The initial warning label on the drug made no mention of the risk of fatal gastrointestinal bleeding.
When used in conjunction with low-doses of aspirin in patients who had previously suffered a heart attack or stroke, the overall benefit was relatively modest only a one percent reduction in risk.
Plavix Side Effects: Other Risk Factors
Patients with bleeding ulcers such as Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) face an especially high risk of suffering an adverse Plavix side effect and should avoid taking this drug. Additionally, patients who have recently undergone surgery or suffered other trauma may experience increased and prolonged bleeding from Plavix use.
Other serious Plavix side effects include:
Plavix is an expensive drug, the benefits of which do not outweigh the risks. Moreover, the drug companies did not adequately warn patients of the potentially fatal complications a fact which may make them legally liable for any damages suffered.
