In 1997 the FDA approved Plavix, a medication similar to aspirin but one that caused fewer ulcers, to decrease platelet function in people who suffer from coronary heart disease or acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Plavix was thought to help reduce the risk of a future heart attack or stroke by preventing platelets from sticking together.
