Organophosphate pesticides are the byproduct of nerve agents used during World War II. Exposure to organophosphate is considered dangerous because they are neurotoxins that can attack the nervous system. There are more than 25,000 brands of pesticides available for home and agricultural uses in the U.S. that are either organophosphate or carbamate compounds. These two pesticide types are responsible for over 80% of the U.S. pesticide poisonings.
Every year, an estimated 20,000 reported instance of organophosphate exposures occur. While a significant estimate, this number fails to include the high number of unreported cases affecting people around the world. The failure to treat organophosphate exposures in a timely manner can result in prolonged and even permanent neurotoxic symptoms. Used as a nerve gas for warfare, organophosphate compounds are especially powerful and can cause death even more quickly and frequently than the pesticide organophosphate compounds.
In January 2004, the EPA was sued on behalf of farm workers in Washington and other states on the claims that the EPA has allowed the use of organophosphate pesticides despite the date indicating the serious dangers of exposure to it. When exposed to organophosphate, people may experience dizziness, vomiting, seizures, paralysis, loss of mental function, and death. When farmers are exposed to the pesticides they pose a danger to their families because the organophosphates can be brought into the home on skin and clothing and vehicles. It has been shown that people living with a quarter mile of fields with organophosphates have a four to five time greater level of chemicals within their bodies.
The Environmental Protection Agency has completed its mandatory 10-year review of all pesticides used in the United States and is recommending limits on pesticide use based on their adverse health effects.
