Traumatic Brain Injury (also referred to as TBI) is a specific type of head injury that can lead to varying states of debilitation. Over one million Americans suffer a TBI each year, and many end up with serious and lasting disabilities. The most likely cause of a TBI is a blunt-force injury to the skull-which in turn can cause a variety of injuries to the brain tissue.
Types of TBIs:
Swelling: Swelling is a natural reaction of body tissues to injury. In other areas of the body, tissue surrounding the injury expand to relive pressure, but in a TBI, the soft tissue of the brain is encased in the hard bone of the skull. TBI victims who experience swelling of the brain suffer from the increasing pressure inside the skull, which can cause further injury. If a person with TBI is found to have brain swelling, surgeons will commonly remove a portion of the skull to relieve the pressure on the brain.
Tearing : TBIs caused by sudden impacts, just as car accidents or sports-related TBIs can cause tissue in the brain to tear apart. Modern medical imaging devices may be unable to identify the tearing in a TBI patient, resulting in false diagnoses or a patient with considerable brain damage to be released with a clean bill of health.
Bruising : TBI related bruising, like tearing, is related to an impact to the skull. There are two impacts in a TBI accident such as this: the initial impact of the head itself and the secondary impact of the soft tissue of the brain with the harder bone of the skull. The impact of this sort of TBI can rupture small blood vessels, allowing blood to escape into different parts of the brain. The pooling of this blood can cause pressure on the brain, portions of which may then cease to function.
TBI victims, depending upon the nature and extent of their injuries, and the level of treatment that they receive, may fully recover from the TBI incident. Other persons can function at a lower level than previously, with the aid of therapy and medications specific to the needs of TBI patients. Some victims, on the other hand, will never recover from their TBIs and may remain paralyzed, in a vegetative state, or may die from the TBI itself or complications stemming from their injuries.
For TBI victims and their families, the emotional and physical toll that such an injury exacts can be quite high. TBI treatment and medicines cost money, and the longer and more intense the required treatment, the more it costs. If the TBI is revealed to have happened through the fault or negligence of another party, then the victim, or the family of the TBI victim, may be entitled to collect monies for lost wages, medical care, hospital bills, pain and suffering, and even punitive damages.
A TBI case can be complicated, and requires an attorney who is familiar with the specific details needed to win. A lawyer experienced in representing TBI victims may be able to advise you as to whether or not you have a case, and what steps to take next.
