A traumatic brain injury is damage to the brain that is caused by an external physical force such as a strong jolt or blow to the head. The cause of traumatic brain injury can involve a number of different events. Car accidents, falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, firearm and other physical violence, and abuse are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury.
Motor vehicle accidents are the cause of traumatic brain injury fifty percent of the time. If a victim suffers a traumatic brain injury in an accident that was caused by another party they may be eligible to seek compensation for their medical expenses, loss of income and pain and suffering from the liable party in a civil lawsuit.
Firearm violence accounts for ten percent of all traumatic brain injuries but is the leading cause of traumatic brain injury that results in death. Nine out of every ten firearm accidents results in fatality when it is the cause of traumatic brain injury. Almost two thirds of all firearm related traumatic brain injuries are self inflicted.
Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in the elderly population. Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of disability and death in children and young adults. The most common cause of traumatic injury in infants is child abuse, often referred to as “shaken baby” syndrome.
No matter the cause of traumatic brain injury, the extent of damage that is suffered depends on the severity and location of impact, and whether the injury is open or closed. Coma, concussion, loss of consciousness and secondary injuries can all compound the damage that is caused by traumatic brain injury.
Over 1.5 million Americans suffer from traumatic brain injuries every year. Fifty thousand people die as a result of serious traumatic brain injuries and another 230,000 require hospitalization for traumatic brain injuries. One in four adults who suffer from traumatic brain injury is unable to return to work after a year of recovery time. Almost one million victims each year suffer from long term or permanent disability as a result of traumatic brain injury.
Though every case of traumatic brain injury is relatively unique, this type of trauma usually results in physical, cognitive, and/or emotional impairment. No matter the cause of traumatic brain injury, victims may experience some or most of the following symptoms: physical symptoms~ seizures, motor problems, weakness and fatigue, vision and hearing problems, poor coordination; cognitive symptoms~ problems with attention, concentration, information processing, language and speech; and emotional/social problems~ poor coping skills, lack of emotional and self control, and extreme mood swings.
